Eravamo seduti assieme solo 5 settimane fa al ristorante italiano "Ciao" a Kathmandu... Mi sembravi più euforico del solito... ma eri sempre il Tomaz Humar che amava salutare stringendo la mano con forza inaspettata per poi sederti e parlare a ruota libera, confidare i tuoi sogni, le tue scoperte i tuoi desideri. Lo facevi con le persone che ti ispiravano o di cui ti fidavi. Mi avevi fatto capire che preferivi non si parlasse in giro del tuo imminente e "confidato" progetto, il Langtang Lirung di 7246 m in Nepal, della sua parete sud, che avresti tentato da solo. Mi avevi anche descritto il fascino ed i pericoli di quell'avventura.... Ti avevo pure regalato 3 chiodi al titanio perchè tu potessi essere leggero e veloce su quella muraglia di roccia e ghiaccio.
Con te al campo base c'era l'amico e "cuoco" comune, Jagat Limbu, ed ero fiducioso di sentire in questi giorni il tuo nome e la storia della tua ennesima evventura, con o senza cima, per mandarti una email e farti una telefonata di congratulazioni.
Purtroppo ho sentito il nome "Tomaz Humar" ad inizio della settimana scorsa, dei tuoi problemi e della richiesta di soccorso. Ho provato a dare una mano a coloro che sono venuti a prenderti, raccontando della parete e del versante che mi avevi mostrato, della via nuova e di Jagat. Ho sperato e pregato che anche questa volta ce la facessi e che gli amici accorsi in tuo aiuto ti potessero trovare presto e vivo. Tu però eri già su altre vette, su pareti impossibili per qualunque umano. Noi quà, impotenti ed increduli , a prenderne coscienza, a dire una preghiera, a pensare, a scappare dalle domande che non trovano risposte. Noi quà a vivere come hai fatto Te, la più esaltante, indiscutibile e misteriosa delle avventure: quella dell'esistenza... ognuno la sua..... Ciao Tomaz…Ciao…

Siamo rientrati a Kathmandu. La spedizione posticipata all’anno prossimo, sta vivendo allegramente questi ultimi giorni in Nepal. Abbiamo appena finito di pranzare con l’amico Tomaz Humar e ieri nella valle del Khumbu abbiamo incontrato altri amici/alpinisti famosi come i fratelli svizzeri Simon e Samuel Anthamatten diretti al Jasemba 7350 m e il tedesco Robert Jasper con il triplice obbiettivo Pumori, Ama Dablam e Cholatse . Tutti sono diretti a montagne Nepalesi perché il Tibet è davvero chiuso grazie alle decisioni assurde del regime comunista…. In questi tre giorni di permanenza nella capitale nepalese cercherò di mettere a posto il mio magazzino e fare un inventario di ciò che resta qua e di quello che invece ci riporteremo a casa. Di sicuro non passeranno 12 mesi prima della prossima scalata perché il cervello sta già pensando alla prossima idea.

We just arrived in Kathmandu. The expedition is postponed of one year and we are enjoying the last days together. We just finished to get lunch with my friend Tomaz Humar and yesterday we met other friends in the Khumbu valley like the Anthamatten brothers going to Jasemba 7350 m and Robert Jasper going to Pumori, Ama Dablam and Cholatse. All those guys are choosing Nepalese projects due the closure of Tibet imposed by the communist regime. In the there remaining days I will organize all my equipment here in Nepal and I will also prepare the cargo to send back in Italy. For sure I will not wait 12 months before to organize another expedition because I already have some projects in my mind….

Non si possono vivere i propri sogni facendosi dettare le regole del gioco dagli altri. Un’avventura, una esplorazione, nascono dal profondo della propria anima, dalla parte libera ed irrazionale di noi stessi. La Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition è stata la materializzazione di un sogno comune, una condivisione di forze e di energie, che hanno trovato in una montagna il punto ove realizzare ambizioni comuni e personali basati sul sentimento di amicizia, rispetto delle regole, accettazione dei rischi e delle responsabilità.

Scalare una montagna di 8000 metri, aprire una via nuova, scendere con lo snowboard dalla cima, correre a piedi o in bicicletta fino al punto di partenza del progetto, comporta una programmazione ed il rispetto di tempistiche delicate e fondamentali che non devono e non possono trovare costrizioni che elevino i rischi, ne amplificano e ne snaturino il senso. Questo è ciò che negli ultimi giorni è purtroppo accaduto in modo rocambolesco ed inesorabile alla nostro progetto, a causa dei provvedimenti restrittivi presi dal governo cinese che in modo improvviso, perentorio, e non negoziabile ha chiuso le frontiere col Tibet, impedendo a chiunque di entrare in quel territorio anche se muniti di visti d’ingresso e regolari permessi. E’ così iniziato il balletto sulle date e sulla durata di questa chiusura cinese ed oggi ci è giunta notizia che il giorno 10 Ottobre dovrebbe essere il primo giorno di potenziale ingresso in Tibet (tutti i giorni questa data ha subito variazioni e slittamenti). Il 25 di ottobre sarebbe l’ultimo giorno utile di permanenza sul Cho Oyu per la nostra spedizione a causa della data fissata per il volo di rientro e per impegni professionali e personali fissati da tempo. Ciò significa che dovremo accettare di realizzare una spedizione con tre differenti attività e programmi in soli 15 giorni compresi i tempi di trasferimento per e dal campo base. Una follia!! Un pessimo insegnamento da dare, un’accettazioni di rischi evidenti, una spesa elevata per un partita persa in partenza se considerata nel completamento di tutti e tre differenti progetti (scalata, snowboard e bike/run a Kathmandu). Allora diciamo NO! Non ci stiamo a farci condizionare così anche nella realizzazione del nostro sogno. Sarebbe davvero una pessima dimostrazione di autostima farsi prendere per il naso e per i fondelli da chi vuole imporre le proprie regole, tempi e condizioni contravvenendo a quelle fino a ieri annunciate e da noi rispettate. Non ci sentiamo in vacanza a spese degli sponsor e neppure condizionati dagli eventuali commenti di stampa ed amici. Nessuno di noi vuole tentare la sorte e sperare di realizzare in tempi quasi impossibili ciò che per anni abbiamo preparato e sognato. Congeliamo il progetto Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition, diciamo no grazie alle autorità cinesi, salviamo i soldi di chi ha creduto in noi nonostante la difficile congiuntura economica e, portando rispetto a ciò che la ragione e la morale ci impone, torniamo a casa tutti assieme senza escogitare progettini di ripiego e salva faccia individuali.

Siamo ovviamente tristi sul lato sportivo ed esplorativo ma fieri di aver trovato in questa decisione un accordo comune e totale. Un bel team sin dall’inizio, un grande team anche in questa decisione. In 41 spedizioni non mi era mai capitato di farmi dettare le condizioni e prendere per il naso in questo modo e sono contento che anche questa volta il sottoscritto e chi è con me, non è caduto nel tranello della cieca, sorda, irrazionale ambizione.

Ringrazio vivamente la The North Face per aver supportato tutto il nostro progetto e rispettato le decisioni, (anche quest’ultima) che abbiamo preso. Ringrazio tutto il team della Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition per aver dimostrato unità ed amicizia in ogni secondo di questa avventura. La nostra esplorazione di gruppo subisce solo una posticipazione temporale, probabilmente l’autunno 2010, mantenendo integra l’anima ed il rispetto per le regole e della propria persona. Seppur un po’ triste e mortificante, questo pezzo di vita che porto a casa mi regala ed insegna anche qualcosa di prezioso e non negoziabile, proprio come l’improvvisa chiusura del Tibet….

We cannot live our dreams by the rules which others have imposed upon us.

An exploration and adventure is born and grows from the depth of our soul, from the deepest and most free part of ourselves. The Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition was born in this way. It is the result of a common dream, a shared energy and strength concentrated on one mountain to realise a common project, and yet within this for each to be able to realise each his own personal dream and ambition. These hopes and dreams have been based on the values of friendship, accepting the risks and our responsibilities, and respecting the rules laid down by the authorities.

To climb an 8000m mountain, to open a new route, to descend by snowboard from the summit and to run or ride by bike to where the journey began (Kathmandu), without question must be undertaken within a timing which respects the delicate and fundamental requirements of our project. This timing must not, and cannot be restricted, for such restriction would increase the risk and altogether change the spirit and nature of our project. To our sadness this is exactly what has happened during these last days, without hope that the situation will change. The problem is the sudden and unplanned decision of the Chinese authorities to categorically close the border between Nepal and Tibet. No entries into Tibet are allowed, even if the necessary permissions and permits have already been obtained. From the moment that the Chinese made their non-negotiable decision they started to play a game with the dates. Every day the date of the border opening has changed, slipping later and later. Today we had the news that the 10^th October would be the first possible date of entry, but even now no assurance that this would finally be definite. For us, the 25^th October would be the last possible day for our expedition to leave from the base camp of Cho Oyu, due to our professional and personal commitments. This means that we would be forced to accept to make our expedition, with its three very diverse elements, in only 15 days (including the time to make the journey to base camp and to return to Kathmandu). For sure this is a certain ‘craziness’.

If we played the game in this way we would give a bad example, and we would not show to others the spirit by which we choose to live. We would be forced to accept a very evident risk and the huge expense of our expedition would be paid to make a fool’s game. We would have little hope of realising our dream in the way we would choose and in its entirety – to climb to the summit, to make a snowboard descent and to return to our beginnings by running or cycling. So with sadness we categorically say ‘no’ – we don’t accept even in realising our dream that we should be forced to be contrary to our spirit. We would deny our integrity and self respect if we allowed ourselves to accept ‘outside’ influence and to be forced to play a game that is not ours. We had respected and obeyed the rules regarding permit, visas etc. and we cannot now accept to have different rules, timings and conditions to be imposed.

For each of us we feel we are not ‘on holiday’ at the expense of our sponsors and we will neither allow ourselves to be pressured by eventual comments from the press, the media, from the mountain community or from our friends. Not one of us wants to play with destiny, hoping to realise in an impossible time the dream that we have so long prepared. We have taken the decision to ‘freeze’ our project of the Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition. We gently say ‘no thank you’ to the game the Chinese authorities wish us to play, and we save financial commitment of our sponsor who even in such difficult economic time has supported us, believed in us and given us this opportunity. We return home altogether, without each rushing to invent a last minute project, even though the opportunity would be here for each of us. Individual achievements here and now would only save our individual reputations, but would not be in keeping with our common spirit. In this way, returning home as a team, we hope to respect what our deep values and spirit tells us to do.

Without doubt we are sad to temporarily ‘break’ our exploration and dream, but we are proud that we were easily able to make a common decision. We have been a true team from the first days, and are now a true team in taking this difficult decision.

For me, in 41 expeditions I have never accepted unrealistic conditions to be imposed upon me or to allow my values to become part of another’s ‘game’. I am happy and proud that also this time, I and my friends, did not fall into the trap of blindly following ambition in a way not true to ourselves.

I take this opportunity to deeply The North Face who have supported our project and who have respected the decisions that we have had to take. I also would like to thank all the team of the Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition for demonstrating unity and friendship in every moment of our adventure. Our dream and exploration is not ‘over’ but only postponed, probably until next autumn 2010 – in this way we keep to the soul of our project and maintain our personal integrity, self-respect and obey the rules. Even though we are each of us a little sad and hurt, this piece of life we take back home is a gift that teaches us that deep within we have something precious – as un-negotiable as the imposed closure of Tibet.

Scherzo Cinese

Le cose ovviamente non possono andare lisce almeno per una volta… Infatti anche stavolta è arrivata la sorpresina. I cinesi hanno chiuso le frontiere dal 24 settembre fino al giorno 8 ottobre. Nessuno, proprio nessuno ossia spedizioni e turisti possono entrare in Tibet per la ricorrenza del 60° anniversario della proclamazione della repubblica popolare Cinese il 1° ottobre 1949 e le celebrazioni organizzate a Piazza Tienanmen. Le spedizioni presenti ai campi basi verranno lasciate i loco ma non saranno permessi spostamenti in Jeep o altro al di fuori dalla montagna su cui stanno operando. Per noi questa notizia è uno sgambetto perché riduce a soli 15/giorni la possibilità di tentare e salire sul Cho OYU. Infatti il 30 ottobre abbiamo il volo di rientro in Italia da Kathmandu e ciò significa lasciare il campo base tibetano il giorno 25 o 26 ottobre. Se consideriamo che vorremmo rientrare a piedi o in Mountain bike e non in Jeep questo significa che abbiamo bisogno di tempo.

In queste ore stiamo decidendo il da farsi. Saremmo dell’idea di cancellare la spedizione al Cho Oyu e tentare una montagna qua in Nepal, magari vicino a dove già siamo (siamo a Chhukung sotto la sud del Lhotse). Vorremmo però essere sicuri che i Cinesi non ci chiedano comunque i soldi del permesso del Cho Oyu perché in quel caso butteremmo al vento circa 40.000 dollari. Inoltre essendo una MULTISPORT expedition stiamo valutando di avere un opzione che permetta ad Emilio di scendere in Snowboard, a Lizzy di correre a Kathmandu e a me ed Hervè di effettuare una prima salita o via nuova. Forse io ed Hervè saremmo i più facilitati nella scelta perché qua c’è tutto da fare…. Ma non vogliamo condizionare troppo i nostri compagni di spedizione. Lasciateci qualche ora e decideremo…

Chinese Play

Also this time we have something bad. Another unexpected news that change our programs. The Chinese decided to close the Tibetian border from 24^th September till 8^th October due the 60° anniversary of the Chinese Republick born the 1^st Octobre 1949 and the celabrations organized in Tienanmen Square. So again and again the Chinese decided to close the country from the rest of the world and all the Turist and visitors that already planned and paid to enter in Tibet are now obliged to stay far till the 8^th October ( hoping they will not decide for another late date). So we are excluded to Tibet till that date and our remaining time for a Cho Oyu climb and run back to Kathmandu is too short ( we have to fly back the 30^th October). In these hours we are discussion an alternative project. We would like to cancel the Cho Oyu expedition and focus on an alternative peak here around Chhumjung. There are a lot of peaks and big mountains and new routes to climb... But it is not so easy to combine also a snowboard descent (as Emilio like to do) and a Mountain bike / run way back to Kathmandu. We are also still afraid to loose the money for the Cho Oyu climbing permit and in that case the problems will be bigger. Let’s see what will happen in the next hours/days. In the meantime we continue to acclimatize here around…

Ciao ragazzi!!!
Dopo la pausa elicotteristica di questa estate rieccomi di nuovo on line a raccontarvi di montagna, di una nuova spedizione. Ormai lo sapete che non divento matto a collezionare montagne e puntare alla collezione dei 14 ottomila ed è per questo che, come già avvenuto nel passato, ritorno ad una montagna che ho già salito ma che conserva un grosso fascino e numerose possibilità di avventura. Il Cho Oyu sarà infatti il mio, nostro, prossimo obbiettivo. Le Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition, sponsorizzata da The North Face, sarà infatti la storia che coinvolgerà il sottoscritto ed altri amici qua con me, sulla sesta montagna più alta del pianeta.
Il progetto sarà triplice e da qua è nato il nome della spedizione. Io ed Hervè vorremmo aprire una via nuova sulla parete sud ovest della montagna. Emilio Previtali sogna invece di salire la via classica e scendere con lo snowboard. Lizzy Hawker e Tamara Lunger intendono invece salire e scendere la via classica senza ossigeno come tutto il resto del team e poi realizzare un “inusuale” rientro a Kathmandu. Infatti la terza ed ultima parte della spedizione ci coinvolgerà tutti in una prova di endurance suddivisa in mountain bike (Emilio ed Hervè) e di corsa (Lizzy, Tamara ed io). Insomma di carne al fuoco ce n’è tanta ed il progetto è difficile e complicato. Ma non bisogna mai porre limiti ai sogni se si hanno le gambe e l’esperienza per tentarli. Questo è ciò che ho deciso di trasmettere ed insegnare alla più giovane del gruppo, Tamara Lunger, alla sua prima esperienza in alta quota, ma con un motore ed un esperienza sulle montagne alpine, che potrebbero portarla agilmente sugli 8201 metri del Cho Oyu.
Vedremo comunque nelle prossime settimane come saranno le condizioni della montagna, le nostre condizioni fisiche e la forza che sarà rimasta dopo il tentativo al Cho Oyu. Voi state connessi, perché regolarmente vi racconterò come stanno andando le cose…

After the Helicopter Pilot training of the last months, I’m here again writing you about a climbing adventure. I’m in Nepal, in the village of Chhukung at 4740 in the Khumbu valley. I’m together with 8 other friends acclimatising before our big climb of Cho Oyu. As you probably know I’m not a fanatic in collecting al the 14x 8000 meters peaks and for that reason I’m trying to realize and explore new potential climbs also on the mountains I climbed before. Cho Oyu Trilogy Expedition sponsorized by The North Face is the name of this coming adventure. We are 5 mountaineers, 2 cameramans, 1 photographer and 1 base camp manager. The project is a multi activity expedition involving an attempt with no oxygen of new route of the south west face (I and Hervè Barmasse), a snowboard descent along the classical route (Emilio Previtali) and the climb of the classical route without oxygen by Lizzy hawker and Tamara Lunger. At the end of the climb we will try to go back to Kathmandu by Mountain Bike (Emilio and Hervè) and by run (Lyzzy, Tamara and I).
So it will be an EXTREME multi project expedition but we trained a lot for this attempt and we are ready to play our carts. The aim is to explore our limits and not to establish a record. In this group I involved also Tamara Lunger, the youngest of the team, to whom I want to teach the “secret” of high altitude climbs. I feel that she could be the future of the female himalast as I supposed for Denis Urubko 10 years ago….
For the coming days we will try to walk on the summit of Chhukung Ri 5555 m, than climb Island Peak and sleep on the summit and than go Back to Kathmandu and rive to Tibet to our Cho Oyu base camp. Stay tuned to follow our adventure 

Soccorsi sul Latok 1 ad Oscar Perez

“..Adesso capite perché mi sono rotto le scatole di vedere ed assistere impotente che gli elicotteri non vanno a recuperare nessuno in alta quota... (al Latok 1 per lo sfortunato spagnolo bisognerebbe andare a 6500 metri), Ecco il motivo perché sto diventando pilota d'elicottero…

La macchina giusta per andarci ci sarebbe ed è L’Eurocopter (Aerospatiale) SA 315B Lama che risale tra la fine degli anni ’60 e gli inizi degli anni 70 ma che è ancora il TOP per quelle missioni ed è molto in uso da noi in Italia, in Svizzera, Francia, India, . Anche in Pakistan ne hanno ma bisogna avere voglia, ed addestramento specifico per tentare soccorsi estremi di quel tipo e a me sembra che manchino entrambi. Quella macchina fu studiata appositamente per l’esercito indiano per essere utilizzato in alta quota. Detiene ancora il record mondiale degli elicotteri per altitudine massima raggiunta. Il 21 giugno del 1972 raggiunse infatti la quota di ben 12 441 metri!!! La casa costruttrice stabilisce in 5400 m la quota massima di overing di servizio, ma 6998 m la evenual capacità limite, estrema, di overing fuori effetto suolo. Già nel 1969 durante alcuni dimostrativi con un Lama si riuscì ad andare ed atterrare a 7500 metri (24.600 ft) con due persone a bordo (pilota e copilota) + 140 kg di peso.

Tutto questo non significa che andare a quote estreme sia dunque facile o di ordinaria capacità operativa, tutt’altro, rimane una cosa estrema, ma dimostra che non è impossibile concepire e tentare interventi estremi a quote elevate se le condizioni meteo lo permettono..

Con un molto più recente modello, l’ Eurocopter 350 B3 sono andati sin sulla vetta dell’Everest e ci sono rimasti con un pattino appoggiato per oltre 30 secondi (video in Yotube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhYG-IgsRJ0 ) a dimostrazione che la tecnologia ed il capitale umano esistono ( anche in Italia ci sono tanti bravissimi ed esperti piloti di montagna) per spostare i limiti operativi un po’ più in lato rispetto a quello che si fa normalmente oggi.

In Nepal la situazione è probabilmente peggiore che in Pakistan. Laggiù oggi non ci sono neppure gli elicotteri del tipo in quantità sufficienti per ipotizzare evacuazioni elitrasportate in alta quota. Alcun anni fa c’erano degli elicotteri russi Mi17 (che restano insieme al lama e al B3 i migliori in alta quota) ma oggi ce n’è operativo solo uno dell’esercito.

Il mio percorso da pilota sarà lungo e complicato ma è comunque iniziato a tutta velocità ed intensità. Magari un giorno quando deciderò di non spostare più i limiti verticali con la tecnica alpinistica inizierò ad esplorarne altri, facendolo magari dentro un elicottero, mettendo a disposizione ciò che dalle montagne più alte ho conosciuto ed imparato... Il progetto e la motivazione ci sono e quando anche i capitali saranno reperiti partirà la spedizione….

Ora comunque spero di tornare dagli USA già Pilota Commerciale il 6 Settembre per poter pensare completamente alla parete sud Ovest del Cho Oyu e alla mia partenza del 15 settembre. Lassù infatti mi aspetterà un’altra esaltante avventura a pieni polmoni con Hervè Barmasse. Sulla stessa montagna ci sarà anche Emilio Previtali, Lizzy Hawker e Tamara Lunger e la spedizione chiamata “Tlilogy Cho Oyu expedition” di cui vi palerò più avanti.”

Cari amici,
volevo semplicemente invitarvi a venire numerosi alla serata conferenza che Giovedì 26 giugno vedrà Denis Urubko ed il sottoscritto a Darfo Boario Terme (BS), in occasione della rassegna "Montagne al Cinema".
Denis non ha bisogno di presentazioni ma non avendo mai fatto una conferenza/proiezione in Italia non bisogna lasciarsi scappare l'occasione per incontrarlo. Dopo la nostra ultima salita in prima invernale al Makalu che ha coronato 10 anni di amicizia, è nata l'idea e la possibilità di portarlo al grande pubblico. Denis è stato tante volte da me a Bergamo e anche questa volta sarà mio ospite, ma la novità è rappresentata da questa serata/proiezione assieme. Come una scalata, divideremo a metà il piacere e l'onere di raccontarvi di noi e dei nostri sogni comuni e personali.

Carissimi amici. Anche se la stampa italiana specializzata non se n'è quasi accorta come era già successo anche per la prima invernale al Makalu di questo inverno (a parte alcuni quotidiani e siti internet, ma pressoché nulla sui Magazine "specializzati") ho il piacere e l'onore di annunciarvi che Denis Urbuko (assente per problemi di visto consolare) ed il sottoscritto hanno ricevuto dalle mani di Chris Bonington l'Eiger Award definito dagli organizzatori l'Oscar dell'Alpinismo. Siccome l'assegnazione del premio ad uno dei tre candidati scelti dall'organizzazione è avvenuta tramite votazione del pubblico, mi sembra doveroso ringraziare tutti quelli che ci hanno dato la preferenza. Grazie di cuore! Denis ed io speriamo di poter continuare anche in futuro a praticare il nostro Alpinismo :-)

Ciao!
Il tempo quà in California sta volando.... letteralmente.... Pilotare, studiare, correre,scalare e saltare. In questa ultima attività sto esperiemntando il piacere di "volare" per due minuti e oltre, grazie ad una tuta alare e agli insegnamenti di Barry Holubeck (un guru di questa disciplina ed uno dei base jumper più forti ma riservati e discreti del paese a stelle e strisce). E' stata una fortuna incontrarlo grazie al suggerimento di joby Ogwyn. Per diventare bravi e sognare di divenirlo sempre più è fondamentale avere un grande maestro. In tutto....

Time is running,is "flying" here in USA. Piloting,studying, running, climbing and skydiving. In this last activity I'm learning and growing my ability using the wingsuit, enjoying the 2 minutes of flight thanks to the efficient of the wingsuit but mostly thanks to the training and teaching of Barry Holubeck (a "guru" of wingsuit and one of the best, strong even apparently quite and silent, base jumper of USA). I had been lucky to meet him thanks the suggestion of Joby Ogwyn. To become good and improve better and better is very important to have the right teacher, coach, trainer and never stop learning and training hard.... Always...

Sono venuto quà per imparare a pilotare un elicottero e prendere il brevetto di pilota Privato e poi Commerciale. La mia scuola si trova in California, 50 miglia a north di Santa Monica e si chiama Twinair.E' diretta da Yoyo Gusso, un pilota ed istruttore straordinario che oggi si è prestato a filmare il suo nuovo e fresco allievo alla sua quinta lezione ed ora di volo.....

Ciao!!!
Rieccomi dopo un bel po di tempo in cui sono rimbalzato tra un intervista e l'altra, viaggi all'estero, incontri, e inizio degli allenamenti.
Tra due settimane ripartirò per un periodo di 6 settimane in USA dove ho deciso di prendere il brevetto privato di pilota di elicottero seguito poi da altri 2 mesi per prendere anche quello commerciale. sarà una full immersion intensissima ma appassionante per realizzare quello che da tempo era un sogno e che ora ho deciso che diventi realtà e magari in futuro anche una professione.
Le scorse settimane sono stato in Kazakhstan ed in Russia per incontrare amici, e mettere le basi per un progetto elicotteristico serio che magari un giorno vi racconterò, magari quando avrò finalmente trovato qualcuno disposto ad investire e credere in me ed in qualcosa di unico ma che appare anche molto remunerativo....
A mosca invece sono andato a fare due conferenze ed a saltare con il paracadute nella drop zone di Aerograd a -26 gradi ed atterraggio nella neve. Ho anche testato il nuovo tunnel per allenamenti paracadutistici. Eccezionale!!!

Meetting with Mario Curnis and Alpine club of Bergamo

Ieri è stato un bel momento. Alla sede del CAI Bergamo (di cui sono socio da annni) che ha patrocinato la mia spedizione al Makalu, ho ricevuto i saluti del Presidente Paolo Valoti e del Presidente della Provincia di Bergamo Geom. Valerio Bettoni. E' stato anche il momento per incontrare l'amico Mario Curnis che nel 1980 fu il primo a tentare il Makalu d'inverno in coppia con il famoso Renato Casarotto. Lui ha aperto i "giochi" invernali al Makalu ed io li ho chiusi. Due Bergamaschi che dunque avevano voglia di ricordare e festeggiare un sogno comune realizzato.

Yesterday evening I get a very nice moment and present. I had been invited and received by the President of Alpine Club of Bergamo Mr.Paolo Valoti and by the highest politically autority of the Province of Bergamo (my city and district) Mr Valerio Bettoni. It had been also the opportunity to meet Mario Curnis with whom I climbed Everest (my second time) the 24th May 2004. Mario had been the first man together with Renato Casarotto who attempted Makalu in the winter 1980/1981. He opened the "winter games" on Makalu and I close them.... Two person of Bergamo, two friends with same dream...

Ieri sono arrivato nella mia nuova casa di Bergamo. C'era la mia famiglia ad aspettarmi ed un piccola ma sincera festa organizzata in casa mia, la stufa accesa e prodotti tipici bergamaschi sul tavolo.
Oggi sono poi andato a prendere mia figlia a scuola ed ora stiamo preparando la sua festa del 10° compleanno.
Denis è rimasto a Kathmandu ad aspettare Jagat, Mingma e tutto il materiale proveniente dal campo base. Provvederà lui all'inventario e alla sistemazione, lavaggio ed asciugatura di tutto il prezioso materiale. Grazie mille Denis!!!

Yesterday I came back to my new home in bergamo. My family was there waiting for me and organizing a small party. The fire was ready and the wood burning and heating the house. On the table some local products and a good bottle of wine.
Today I went to pick my douter at the school and now we are preparing her 10th birthdate party.
Denis remained in Kathmandu waiting for jagat, mingma and all the expedition's equipment. He will provide to dry it, make an inventory and repare what will be eventually broken.

KATHMANDU

Oggi siamo arrivati a Kathmandu dirattamente volando dall’Hillary Base camp a 4800 m. Perchè? Dopo la nostra salita invernale al Makalu e la veloce discesa al campo base avanzato, ho cominciato ad accusare formicolii, poi confiore e parzle perdita di sensibilità alle dita del piede destrao ed alcune del sinistro. Nulla di Grave ma ho preferito contattare alcuni amici specialisti russi del casso (Dott. Evgeny Vingradsky) che mi hanno detto di inizare la terapaia di iniezioni con Eparina (che avavo con me) e di non fare l’eroe iniziando il lungo trekking di ritorno. Era necessario un’evaquazione in elicottero per evitare complicazioni, infezioni e peggioramenti. Allora ho chiamato Nima Nuru Sherpa della Cho Oyu trekking che ha subito organizzato la missione in Elicottero. Io e Denis però siamo dovuti scendere di notte a piedi dai 5650 metri del campo base avanzato ai 4800 m della campo base Hillary. L’elicottero ci avrebbe prelevato solo lì, perché limite operativo di quota. Stamane alle 8:00 l’elicottero è arrivato ed in 1 oraci siamo ritrovati nella caotica e bellissima Kathmandu. Nima mi ha subito portato da n medico specialista che mi provato la sensibilità, mi ha fatto una iniezione e prescritto una cura antibiotica per evitare infezioni. Ha confermato la necessità di evitare di camminare e la necessità dell’elicottero. Domani e dopodomani dovrò passare nuovamente da lui per i bendaggi e le cure.
Jaga e mingma (il nostro cuoco ed aiuto cuoco) partiranno dopodomani dal campo base avanzato e scenderanno con 15 portatori tutta la valle del Makalu. Saranno a Kathmandu tra 10 giorni con tutta la nostra attrezzatura. Oggi io e Denis abbiamo fatto il de briefing al Ministero del Turismo, domani avremo una conferenza stampa e domenica incontreremo Miss Hawley

Today we arrived in Kathmandu coming directly from Hillary Base camp at 4800 m.
Why? After our winter climb of Makalu and our fast return in ABC I started to feel cold to my feet and I lost only partially the sensibility of my toes. That Why I contacted some doctors and they advised me to make some injection of Eparin and AVOID to trek down to the valley for 5 days and request an helicopter to avoid any complication to my feet. So I called Nima Nuru Sherpa and he organize an helicopter for me and Denis but I had quickly to organize a night trekking to the low BC, 1000 meters below the ABC. So in the darkness we walked carefully down and this morning at 8:00 a.m the helicopter came and in 1 hours we arrived directly to Kathmandu. Immediately I had been visited by a Doctor, specialist in frostbite, and he agreed that the helicopter evacuation had been a necessary solution. I have to visit him again Sunday and make again all the medical therapy and treatment. There is any risk for my feet but I have only to be patient for the next weeks to wait that the sensibility will return completely normal.
Jagat and Mingma (cook and helper) will start to trek down after tomorrow will 15 porters. They will arrive in Kathmandu after 9-10 days. Today we did the debriefing at the misery of tourism, tomorrow we will have a press conference and after tomorrow the meeting with Miss Hawley

Sto per andare a nanna e domattina si parte per il tentativo alla vetta. Saremo impegnti 3 giorni. Ci sono molte incognite dato che NON abbiamo mai dormito a 7400 ma ci siamo solo andati e tornati in giornata. Le previsioni sono buone, il vento dovrebbe essere sopportabile. Insomma ci proviamo. Mal che vada sarà l'ultima tappa di acclimatamento.... Probabilmente per i prossimi 3 giorni il blog non sarà aggiornato. Mia moglie è in Romania per partecipare all'ultima gara di coppa del mondo di dry tooling e dunque non potrò contare sul suo aiuto per gli aggiornamenti telefonici. Meglio così...un pò di suspance non guasta....

I'm going sleep and tomorrow morning we will start for our summit push. We will climb for 3 days. We really don't know how we will fell above 7400 because we never slept there during this exp. and we had been only one time in that altitude 1 week ago. We will do our best. The weather forecast is good, it look that the wind should be not impossible.
For the next 3 days the blog will be not updated. My wife is in Romania for the last competition of the dry tooling world cup so she can't help me in update the blog. Ok good nigh and cross the finger for us....

24 ore alla partenza- 24hours to the start

Avremmo dovuto partire stamattina. Giornata galattica, neanche una nuvola, ma il vento in quota è ancora oltre i 100km/h. Chi lo dice? Karl Gabl, il nostro metereologo di Innsbruck. Le previsioni meteo sono un po’ come la fede in Dio. O ci si crede oppure no. Credere a sprazzi alle previsioni meteo è la cosa più negativa in alpinismo, dunque sin dall’inizio della spedizione bisogna prendere la decisione di fidarsi o meno.. Io con Karl mi sono sempre trovato bene, gli ho sempre creduto e non ha mai sbagliato. Anche quest’anno ho deciso di fare lo stesso. Seppur non vedo più gli sbuffi di neve sulla cresta del Makalu, sento il rumore forte del vento che probabilmente ha solo cambiato direzione. Certo è durissima resistere oggi, e stare qua fermi…Domani mattina però si parte. Gabl mi ha detto che domenica il vento sarà a 70km/h e così pure metà giornata di lunedì. Proprio lunedì è il giorno teorico del nostro tentativo alla vetta. Farlo domenica avrebbe significato sbucare al Makalu La di sabato con 100km/h di vento , salire ancora 300 mt di dislivello, montare la tenda in quelle condizioni impossibili e passarci pure la notte… Tutto questo secondo il bollettino di Karl. Avrà ragione anche questa volta? Io ho deciso di fidarmi….

Today was our theoretical day to start for our summit push. The weather is perfect, no clouds, but still strong wind above 7000 meters. Who say that? Karl Gabl, our forecast” guru” of Innsbruck. The weather forecast is like the faith in GOD. Or you believe in Him or not. Believe only sometimes is the worst think in Alpinism, so since the beginning of the expedition I decided to believe completely and follow the Karl Gabl’s forecast as I did since 2003. Today we didn’t see any storm on the Makalu ridge but we can hear the sound of the wind. Probably it only changed direction. So following the last information of Karl we decided to wait 24 hours more. Today and tomorrow the wind above 7000 meters should be over 100 km/h, and Sunday and Monday morning 70km/h. So our summit attempt should be Monday morning after spending the night at 7700 meters in our superlight,small, single wall tend that The North Face prepared for us. I really hope that once more Karl Gabl will be right and we will have the energy to climb so high in so cold and windy conditions…

Allenamento - Training

Oggi altro giorno fantastico al campo base e molto ventoso oltre i 7400 metri. Da qualche giorno il vento ha cambiato direzione ed ora soffia da nord. Così il campo base è tranquillo, soleggiato e calmo e solo sulla cresta oltre il Makalu La c’è l’inferno.
Dopo 4 giorni di riposo al campo base, dove abbiamo realizzato contatti video e audio con l’ISPO di monaco, oggi abbiamo deciso di fare un allenamento. Siamo andati “abbastanza velocemente” a campo 1 a 6100 metri in un 1 ora e 10 minuti (registrato con il mio orologio/altimetro/GPS della Polar). Siamo poi ritornati al campo base in 28 minuti. Un stimolo “salutare” per cuore, polmoni e muscoli. Le condizioni meteo sembrano preannunciarsi stabili per il resto della settimana ma con vento forte fino a venerdì. Poi sembra che sabato e domenica il vento “cali” a 90km/h sulla vetta. Per questo abbiamo deciso di partire venerdì per campo due, poi salire sabato a campo 3 e ….tentare la vetta Domenica. Di sicuro sarà importante il bollettino meteo che Karl Gabl ci manderà domani. Potrebbe confermare le nostre intenzioni o farle slittare.. Cogliamo l’occasione per augurare ai nostri amici impegnati in Pakistan al Broad Peak di avere presto 3-4 giorni favorevoli per il loro tentativo invernale

Today the weather is fantastic (in base camp) and the wind continue to be over 120Km/h above 7400. So after 4 days rest we decided to make some training going to camp 1 and back quite fast… 1 hour 10 minutes to go camp 1 and 28 minutes to come back (I recorded with my heart rate monitor and GPS POLAR). Just to keep feet our muscle. It look that the weather will remain sunny and the wind should decrease the speed till 90KM/h in the weekend. So we are thinking to start Friday to camp 2, Saturday to C3 and Sunday …maybe…summit push…. It will be very important the weather forecast that Karl Gabl will send us tomorrow. We want to send our best wishes also to our friends to Broad Peak hoping that will have soon 3-4 days of good weather and low wind.

Secondo giorno di Febbraio e secondo giorno di collegamenti audio e video con The North Face all’ISPO, la fiera internazionale dell’articolo sportivo che si svolge a monaco. Oggi però il tempo è favoloso, una giornata da vetta ed un po’ girano le scatole essere quaggiù al campo base. Di questi scherzetti però il meteo ne gioca parecchi e siccome saremmo comunque a riposo non possiamo che ammirare la montagna e goderci il caldo all’interno della tenda. Ieri è stata anche l’occasione per fare un collegamento audio/video in SKYPE con mia figlia Martina. Le ho raccontato molte cose tra cui quella che all’inizio della spedizione abbiamo visto un leopardo delle nevi. La tecnologia insomma mi ha fatto godere un bel momento famigliare 

Second day of February and second day of live conference with The North Face during the ISPO, the international sport exhibition in Munchen, Germany. Today the weather is very good…a perfect summit day but often the weather “play” with the climber giving 24 hours of perfect weather to make the alpinist nervous… So today we enjoy the sun inside our warm tends hoping to have similar condition during our net push. Yesterday it had been also the opportunity for me to make a domestic video/audio live connection with my daughter Martina using SKYPE. It had been a nice moment and we talk a lot about everything. I also told her that during our approach to the mountain we saw a snow leopard in Hillary base camp. Yesterday the technology gave us the possibility to share nice familiar moments…

Oggi è il secondo giorno di riposo al campo base avanzato 5680 m dopo la nostra puntata alle porte del Makalu La a 7400 metri. Il tempo oggi è perturbato ed il vento in quota persiste seppur di intensità inferiore. Tra poco farò un collegamento con lo stand della The North Face (mio sponsor principale) alla fiera internazionale dello sport ISPO di Monaco. La tecnologia ancora una volta permetterà un collegamento audio e video col mondo che coinvolge migliaia di appassionati. Io e Denis in questi giorni stiamo smanettando parecchio sul PC lavorando sulla comunicazione e su futuri progetti....

Today is the second of rest here in ABC at 5680 m. We came back 2 days ago fro the "gate" of Makalu La 7400 and we are now waiting for the next god weather window to climb higher.. Today the weather is not so good. Clouds and wind (but not so strong like the days before). In few minutes I will realize a video and audio live connections with the stand of The North face (my main sponsor) during the ISPO, international sport show in Munich. The technology will give us the opportunity to talk with our "world". In these days I and Denis are working a lot at PC making reports and preparing future projects...

Giornata importante – Important day

Oggi io e Denis abbiamo deciso di mantenere fede al nostro progetto di andare al Makalu La nonostante una notte insonne a 6900 m a causa del vento spaventosamente forte e dalle basse temperature. Karl Gabl, il nostro metereologo di Innsbruck, ha confermato che oggi a 7400 metri una temperatura di -26 e vento tra i 110 e i 120 Km/h che combinati assieme rendono di circa -40° la sensazione del freddo sul corpo.. Ecco perché oggi stata davvero una lotta riuscire a salire lo stretto e ripido canale che porta al Makalu La a 7400 m. Noi ci siamo fermati a50 / 80 metri dal colle perché affacciarsi lassù significava essere investiti da un uragano gelido e da pezzi di ghiaccio volanti. Il nostro obbiettivo era assaporare quella quota, testare la nostra capacità di lavoro a quelle condizioni inumane e aggiustare le eventuali corde fisse lasciate dalle spedizioni della primavera 2008. Abbiamo centrato il nostro obbiettivo e semi congelati siamo rientrati direttamente al Campo Base Avanzato. Ora 4 giorni di riposo e attendiamo che il vento cali per fare una puntata ancora più in alto. Siamo arrivati a 1000 metri dalla vetta in soli 10 giorni dal nostro arrivo al ABC e questo ci rende molto soddisfatti.

Today Denis and I decided to continue in our plane despite a terrible windy night and cold temperature. Karl Gabl our friend and forecast “guru” from Innsbruck, said that today we get a -26 temperature at 7400 m and 110- 120 Km/h wind speed. If we combine the 2 things it means to feel around -40° degree sensation on the body!! That’s why we fight all the day to climb the narrow and difficult gully toward Makalu La 7400 m. Our feet and hands were frozen. We stopped 50 -80 meters before the “gate” to Makalu La to avoid to be invested by a terrible hurricane and fly away…. Our objective was to test our capacity to work in such extreme conditions and do another step in our acclimatisation process. Now we are around 1000 meters below the Makalu summit and there are only 10 days we arrived at ABC. That’s why we are happy about or couple work. Now we will have 4 days rest also because I have some video live connections with my main sponsor The North Face during the outdoor ISPO show in Munich.

Dopo tre giorni di vento furibondo, oggi una giornata "normale", con cielo limpido e vento solo in quota. Al campo base si stava proprio bene.
Domani partiamo per raggiungere in due giorni il Makalu La 7400 m. Le previsioni danno cielo limpido ma vento in forte aumento. Vedremo se riuscireo a resistere....

After 3 days of crazy wind n the mountain and at ABC, today we had a fantastic weather. Tomorrow we will start to reach Makalu la 7400 m in two days. The forecast said that the wind will be very strong and increasing till Saturday... We will see what we will do.

Erano circa le tre di notte quando vi ho mandato il primo report con il nuovo modem arrivato fresco fresco al campo base. Ora è mattina, fatto colazione. Si annuncia una giornata al PC a recuperare due settimane di comunicazioni ed impegni. Domani mattina partenza verso il campo 2 a 6900 m e poi il Makalu La a 7400 m. C'è anche una mezza idea di salire ancora un pò ma questo lo deciderà il vento.
La notte appena passata è stata di vento spaventoso anche al CB, ma le nostre tende hanno retto. Io ero nel mio sacco a pelo col PC e modem accesi a mandarvi le news, ma più di una volta mi sembrava che volasse via tutto.... Grazie The North Face, tende insuperabili!!!
Stamattina finalmente il vento è cessato ed anche in alta quota sembra calato di intensità. Eccovi alcune foto dei giorni appena trascorsi.

It was 3:00 a.m. when I get the line on my computer thanks the new Thuraya DSL modem just arrived few hours before. Now is a sunny morning, we took breakfast and I start immediately to work with my PC and modem to recuperate the missing time…. Tomorrow our plan I to go to Camp 2 at 6900 m than to Makalu La 7400 and go also higher if the wind will be not so impossible…
Last night had been terribly windy here in BC and really I had the sensation to fly away… I was inside my sleeping bag working with PC and Modem while the hurricane tried to destroy our ABC. Thanks God and thanks The North Face tends we have no damages and everybody and everything are safe. This morning we have sun and no wind in BC. On the mountain the wind speed looks lower than usual….

Finalmente oggi, dopo 11 giorni di attesa è arrivato il modem satellitare sostitutivo al campo base. Era dall’inizio della spedizione che avevamo avuto problemi con il nuovissimo modem satellitare ThurayaIP e solo poche volt eravamo stati in grado di mandarvi i report direttamente dal luogo in cui ci trovavamo. Da più di 15 giorni però no funzionava più nulla ed a nulla erano servite le decine di telefonate con i tecnici gli ingegneri della Thuraya. Il modem era probabilmente rotto o difettato ed avevo così richiesto alla ditta Intermatica di Roma (dealer ufficiale Thuraya per l’Italia) di spedirmi per DHL un modem di precedete generazione, il DSL, che no mi aveva mai tradito nelle precedenti spedizione. Gentilmente quelli di Intermatica avevano provveduto subito ma purtroppo il modem è stato sdoganato in Nepal 2 ore dopo che io ero già partito in elicottero verso il campo base del Makalu. Ecco che allora che il modem DSL è stato affidato ad una coppia di portatori apparentemente fidati, che hanno iniziato la marcia a piedi verso di noi. Con quel piccolo pacco da trasportare i tempi previsti erano di 4 giorni ma purtroppo sono stati ben 11 i giorni di attesa. Volete sapere il motivo?. Dopo 2 giorni di marcia i due portatori si sono fermati al villaggi odi Sidua ad ubriacarsi e festeggiare fregandosene dell’urgenza di quella consegna. Oggi avevo mandato verso valle uno dei portatori che sono qua al campo base avanzato ad aiutare in cucina e nei trasporti dal campo base Hillary a quello in cui siamo noi, per andare a cercare gli ubriaconi e quando li ha trovati penso che qualche pedata nel culo ci sia scappata. Il mio portatore di fiducia ha infatti preso in consegna il modem e corso per 3 ore e mezza per ritornare qua a quasi 5700 metri. Mi ha detto che i due alcolisti avevano pianificato di arrivare qua tra due giorni….Dal punto di vista alpinistico forse siete informati tramite i report che dettavo al telefono a mia moglie Barbara. Io e Denis siamo andati a 7100 metri senza acclimatamento particolare e dormito a 6100 e 6900 metri. Dopodomani intendiamo ripartire per andare a 7400 metri al Makalu La e passarci due notti con una salta verso i 7600 metri. Potrebbe essere l’ultima tappa di acclimatamento prima del tentativo alla vetta. Il cielo è quasi sempre limpido ma il vento fa paura!!! Karl Gabl ci ha detto che questa settimana 8000 la velocità sarà tra i 140 ed i 170 km/h!! Ieri note siamo dovuti uscire a rinforzare gli ancoraggi della tenda perché sembrava volasse via tutto. Negli ultimi giorni la temperatura è in calo ma tutto sommato di giorno dentro la tenda scaldata dal sole, si sta bene.

Finally, after 11 days waiting, the DSL Thuraya modem arrived in base camp. It had been a nightmare , in terms of communications, this first part of expedition. During the 2 weeks acclimatisation the new thurayaIP worked few days before die definitively. Despite hundreds of Phone call with the hep desk and engeniers of Thuraya, the IP modem remained died. So I requested a DSL Thuraya by DHL from Italy and it arrived 2 hours after we took off by helicopter to Makalu BC. So Nima Nuru Sherpa, leader of Cho Oyu Trekking, provided 2 local porters to ship the modem by trekking to us. With a so light weight (1,5 kg) we calculated 4 days the timing of that delivery…but we waited 11 days…. The reason? The 2 porters stopped in Sidua village and get drunk and get fun for 6 days!!!
So today morning I was so nervous that I sent down in the valley one of my Nepalese staff to look for the 2 guys and he found them in Hilary base camp, very relaxed thinking to come here in ABC after 1-2 days!! My Nepalese staff “shaked them”, took the modem and run back to ABC in only 3 hours and half. So now we are definitively online using the “old” Thuraya modem DSL… Now Nima is happy for us and we thank him in any case (he has no responsibility abut the delay). I think he is preparing a meeting and long discussion with the 2 crazy and drunk porters…… ahi ahi ahi
About our climbing situation you should be probably be updated by the news that my wife Barbara put on my blog after our daily phone calls conversations. I and Denis reached 7100 m in 3 days only without any specific high altitude acclimatisation (we reached 5554 m in Khumbu). We spend night at 6100 and 6900 and after tomorrow we will start again hoping to reach Makalu La 7400 m and spend 2 nights. It could be the last step before the summit push. The weather is mostly sunny with clear sky but terribly windy!! Karl Gabl said that this coming week will be between 140 and 170 km/h at 8000 m!! The temperature were good but in the last 3 days dropped down a lot but inside the tend with sun we have a comfortable temperature during the day….

Per noi oggi è il secondo giorno al campo base, dopo esserci spinti a 7100 metri tre giorni fa. Oggi è anche il secondo giorno senza sole. Il cielo è sempre stato nuvoloso e quindi le giornate abbastanza noiose. Purtroppo il nostro modem satellitare non è ancora arrivato e questa cosa, oltre a preoccuparci, ci reca danno incredibili per la comunicazione e con gli sponsor. Il malfunzionamento di questo nuovo modem Thuraya è stato veramente un disastro e alla fine della spedizione probabilmente sarò poco diplomatico. Gli aggiornamenti del sito stanno ancora avvenendo tramite dettatura telefonica. Per quanto riguarda l’aspetto alpinistico rimane confermato martedì come giorno di partenza per portarci ai campi alti, ma ovviamente tutto dipende ancora dal meteo.

Today it’s the second day that we stay in basecamp, after that three days ago we went up till 7100 meters. The weather since yesterday is bad and we didn’t see any sun and so it’s a little bit boring here in basecamp. Unfortunately our new satellite modem still not arrived and this makes us a little bit worry. We had incredible damage on our communication and with our sponsors. It’s really a disaster that the new Thuraya modem is not working and at the end of the expedition I will not be as much diplomatic. Now I’m giving the news by satellitephone and Barbara is updating the blog. Our program is to start in two days to go up, of course if the weather allow this.

Oggi io ed il Denis, approfitando di un altra giornata stupenda, non ci siamo fatti sfuggire l'occasione di andare in alto. I metri di dislivello sono come le cigliege uno prende l'altro e ci siamo imposti di fermarci dove il mio GPS indica 6910 m. Qui abbiamo posizionato la nostra tenda e guardando l'orologio ci siamo accorti che sono passate solo due ore e mezza da quando siamo partiti. Le settimane di acclimatamento spese nella valle del Khumbu, sono proprio servite. Domani supereremo la fatidica quota 7000 per poi rientrare a campo base. Speriamo di non farci ingolosire troppo da questi metri che maciniamo con facilità.... Il tempo prima o poi cambierà, meglio divertirsi.

Today Denis and me didn't loose the opportunity to go up high, also because there is a perfect sunny day. Meter after meter we worked up, it was so much fun, that we had to obbligate us to stop the trip when my GPS showed us 6910 meters of hight. Here we set up our tend and by looking our watch we understood that we needed only two and a half hours to arrive til here. The weeks that we past in Khumbu Valley to acclimatise were really helpfull. Tommorow we will pass the important hight of 7000 meters and than go back to the basecamp. We hope to become not too greedy of this meters that we are doing now so easy... The weather sooner or later will change , so it's better to have fun.

Oggi io e Denis siamo agilmente arrivati a C1. Nonostante avessimo gli zaini con 20 chili a testa siamo arrivati qui a 6151 m in meno di un ora e mezza. Oggi la giornata è decisamente fantastica con poco vento e sole caldo. Una tipica giornata da vetta.... domani saliremo a 6800 metri per piazzare C2 e vi passeremo la notte. Il giorno dopo punteremo i 7000 metri, sempre che il meteo ce lo conceda.

Today Tenis in me arrived easily C1. Also if we had to carry 20 chilos each we arrived at 6151 meters in less than one and a half our. Today there is a realy fantastic day, only a few wind and warm sun. A tipically summit day.... tomorrow we will reach 6800 meters, set up C2 and stay there for the night. The day after we will go over 7000 meters, always it the weather will allow us to do this.

Oggi il programma è leggermente variato e Denis ed io abbiamo fatto un doppio viaggio con carico di 20 chili per trasferire le nostre cose dal British Camp all' ABC più alto, perchè è più riparato dal vento e dove abbiamo trovato parecchia acqua. La salita al C1 è quindi solo rimandata di un giorno, ovvero domani. Nel frattempo i portatori ed il cuoco cercheranno di sistemare definitivamente questo campo base avanzato.

Today our program changed a little bit. Denis and me did a double trip with 20 chilos to bring our stuff from British Camp to a higher ABC. This one is more protected from the wind and we could find a lot of water. For this reason our ascent to C1 is posticipated at tomorrow. In the meantime the cook and the other porters will establish definitely the new ABC.

Ieri siamo andati dall'campo base all'ABC (campo base avanzata), per essere più precisi all' British Base Camp dove abbiamo lavorato per prepararci le piazzuole e soprattutto ci siamo preoccupati a cercare l'acqua. Alla fine abbiamo trovato due pozze ghiacciate che dovrebbere garantire il nostro fabbisogno idrico. Il programma per quest'oggi è di salire al campo 1 a circa 6100 metri dove intendiamo passare la notte e il giorno dopo proseguire per il campo 2 a 6800 dove, vento permettendo, ci piacerebbe passare la notte.

Yesterday we arrived ad ABC (advanced base camp), called also British Base Camp. There we worked to realise a place for our tends and we looked to find water. At the end we could find two frozen halls and this will guarantee our water support at ABC. Today we will ascent to C1 at 6100 meters, where we will sleep and tomorrow we will try to reach C2 where we want to pass the night, if the wind does permit us to do that.

Campo base - Basecamp

Finalmente oggi siamo arrivati al campo base Hillary, grazie ad un volo militare che ho affittato da Kathmandu. Non vi dico il costo..... e da far rizzare i capelli, ma non avevamo alternative. Domani cominciamo il trasporto materiali fino al campo base avanzato aiutati da quattro portatori che sono saliti con noi in elicottero. Purtroppo anche qui il modem satellitare Thuraya IP non funziona. Oggi però è arrivato finalmente tra le mani di Nima a Kathmandu il modem sostitutivo che ci verrà portato fin quì da un portatore in circa 8 giorni di trekking. Pazientati dunque questa settimana, poi ritorneremo operativi con foto e video.

Finally today we arrived in Hillary basecamp. We used a military helicopter, that I hired in Kathmandu. I do not want to tell you how much expensive it was.... crazy, but there was no other way. Tomorrow we will start to bring our stuff to the advanced basecamp. Four porters, that came with us with the heli, will help us to do this job. Unfortunately also here, my Thuraya IP is not working. But today the new one arrived in Kathmandu and Nima will provide to send it up with one porter. He will need about 8 days for the trekking. So be patient this week, after we will have again fotos and videos.

Il peggiore - The worse

Non lo scopro sicuramente io il fatto che le sfighe qualche volta si mettono assieme e si snodano una in fila all’altra in modo incredibile, quasi rocambolesco.
Stamattina è arrivato finalmente il mio Modem a Kathmandu dopo che per DHL ha fatto un bel giretto del tipo: Roma – Lipsia - Hong Kong – Bangkok - Kathmandu per complessivi 4 giorni di viaggio tra aerei e dogane. Arrivato a Kathmandu quelli della DHL in Nepal non si sono rotti la schiena per sdoganare e pagare il dazio all’aeroporto (come strumento elettronico nuovo viene richiesta la tassa di importazione) per poi consegnare l’aggeggio al sottoscritto. Si sono limitati a dire che alle 15,30 avrebbero effettuato la consegna ma alle 18,00 dopo ripetute chiamate mi hanno detto che alle due del pomeriggio la dogana chiude e che me lo danno domani. Peccato che però domani mattina alle 8,00 l’elicottero militare che mi è costato un paio di decine di migliaia di dollari prenderò il volo verso il campo base del Makalu e non c’è modo di rinviare o posticipare l’orario. Prendere o lasciare, questa è la condizione operativa dell’elicottero militare MI17 (l’unico in tutto il Nepal). Dunque questa news rischia di essere veramente ‘ultima della spedizione. Tramite il telefono satellitare forse potrò mandare sms o dettare qualche breve comunicato ma foto e video rimarranno nella mia fotocamera e videocamera. Anche oggi ho passato ore al telefono con Thuraya per far funzionare il nuovissimo e stramaledetto Thuraya IP. Superveloce, superleggero e supersfigato…

This morning finally arrived my Modem in Kathmandu, after that DHL has made a good trip like this: Rome - Leipzig - Hong Kong - Bangkok - Kathmandu for a total of 4 days between air travel and customs. It arrived in Kathmandu with the operations of DHL and they did not broken their back to clear and pay the duty at the airport (as a new electronic tool is required for import tax) and then deliver the device to the undersigned. They only sayed that at 15.30 they would deliver it, but at 18.00, after repeated calls, they just told me that the at 2 p.m. in the afternoon the customs closes and that they will give me the modem tomorrow. But pity that tomorrow morning at 8.00 the military helicopter that has cost me a couple of tens of thousands of dollars will take the flight to Makalu base camp and there is no way to postpone or delay the schedule. Take it or leave it, this is the condition of the military heli MI17 (the only all over the Nepal). So this story is likely to be truly the latest dispatch. Using the satellite phone maybe I will able to send text messages or dictate a few word, but fotos and videos will remain in my camera and camcorder. Even today I have spent hours on the phone with Thuraya to operate the new and damned Thuraya IP. Superfast, superlight and super full of bad luck...

Nuovamente a Kathmandu – Again in Kathmandu

Rieccoci a Kathmandu dopo una decina di giorni spesi ella valle del Khumbu ad acclimatarci. Il rientro nella capitale si è reso necessario a causa del forfait dato dai portatori a casusa delle neve alta presente nella valle del Makalu. Per questo il giorno 16 gennaio sarò costretto ad affittare l’unico elicottero russo MI17 disponibile in Nepal, affittandolo dall’esercito Nepalese. Con quello voleremo a Tashigaon dove ci aspetta il cuoco con tutto il materiale lasciato dai portatori e da li direttamente al campo base a circa 4800 metri. Questo giorno nella capitale ci servirà per farci una doccia calda, comprare le ultime cose, ritirare il nuovo modem satellitare che dovrebbe forse arrivare con DHL dall’Italia e poi concentrarci sul Makalu…

Again In Kathmandu after 10 days spent in the Everest region to trek and acclimatizing. Our flight back to here is because our porter didn’t arrived till Makalu Base camp due the deep snow. So the 16th January we should fly with the Russian helicopter MI17 I hired from Army till Tashigaon, where all the equipment and ou kitchen staff are and than directly to Makalu BC. These few hours here in Kathmandu will be used to take a hot shower, buy the last remaining things and wait the new modem coming from Italy by DHL. I hope will arrive in time…. At the 16th January should start our “games” on Makalu…

Acclimatamento finito – Acclimatisation completed

Con oggi finisce il periodo di acclimatamento e preparazione per il nostro tentativo invernale al Makalu. Avremmo voluto spendere ancor qualche giorno oltre i 5000 meri ma i problemi con la carovana di portatori impossibilitati a continuare verso il campo base del Makalu ed in aggiunta i problemi con il mio modem satellitare, ci hanno obbligati a rientrare a Lukla e domani a Kathmandu. Abbiamo ottenuto il permesso per l’utilizzo dell’elicottero militare per elitrasportare tutto il materiale e noi stessi al campo base. Tra un paio di giorni dunque dovremmo effettuare il volo e cominciare la spedizione basandoci però su un acclimatamento già a buon punto. Questo dovrebbe permetterci di muoverci spediti. Nel frattempo la ditta romana Intermatica (dealer ufficiale Thuraya per l’Italia mi ha spedito per DHL un nuovo modem satellitare. Speriamo che arrivi prima che avvenga il nostro volo in elicottero…

Today our acclimatisation period is completed. We are back in Lukla and tomorrow in Kathmandu. Our idea was to stay some more days above 5000 meters but the problem with the porters along the Makalu valley and the problem with my new Thuraya IP modem, convinced us to return back earlier to solve those problem. I fact today we get the permit to se a big MI17 helicopter from Nepaly Army to fly to Makalu base camp in the next das ( I didn’t know yet the price…). In the same time the Italian Thuraya dealer named “Intermatica”, sent me by DHL a new sat modem to replace the other that I have with me here, that work only few minute per day and than “die” for 24 hours. So in few days we should be in Makalu BC and than start or attempt. I hope to get the modem before or helicopter flight…

Rieccoci a Namche bazar dopo due giorni di cammino dai 4730 metri di Chukhung. Abbiamo utilizzato un cavallo per il trasporto dei nostri materiali perché non abbiamo trovato portatori disponibili. Scendendo abbiamo sentito subito la differenza di temperatura e la maggior densità dell’aria. Il nostro amico Nima a Kathmandu sta cercando di organizzare un elicottero per trasportare noi e tutto il materiale al campo base del Makalu tra qualche giorno. Per il momento non abbiamo novità circa l’elicottero ma quando le avremo ve le faremo sapere. Vi posso solo dire che sto ancora litigando con il modem satellitare ch mi permette una connessione di 5 – 10 minuti al giorno poi più ulla. Giusto il necessario per inviarvi questi report ma la mia idea era quella di mandarvi anche dei video…. Se riuscirò a risolvere il problema ve ne accorgerete…..

Again in Namche after 2 days trekking down from Chukhung 4730 m. We used a horse to transport our load because we didn’t found porters in so short time. We are going back to Kathmandu where our friend Nima is trying to organize big helicopter to Tashigaon (where our expedition load are with our cook and kithchen boy) and than to Makalu BC. We have no news about Nima but we hope he is finding a solution with the one of the 2 big helicopter working in Nepal. Since the beginning of expedition I’m fighting with my new modem Thuraya. I can have only 5- 10 minutes internet and than the modem stop to work. That time is just enough to rush in sending you the daily reports. I would like to post also videos but I need a longer time and modem actually doesn’t give more. I’m in contact with Thuraya to solve also this problem.

Problemi - Problems!!!!

Organizzare una spedizione invernale è sempre un incognita, un incubo. Ciò che temevo accadesse ieri è davvero accaduto. La carovana di 43 portatori ha interrotto il loro cammino verso il campo base del Makalu. Seppur qua dove sono io è completamente secco, loro da tre giorni procedevano nella neve alta un metro, polverosa ed inconsistente. Ieri hanno detto basta e si sono preparati a ritornare a valle abbandonando tutto il mio materiale nel punto in cui hanno detto basta… Sarebbe stata la fine!!! E’ il luogo più impervio ed inaccessibile quello in cui erano. Parlando al telefono satellitare con Jagat, il mio cuoco, gli ho detto di convincere i portatori a tornare a valle e dunqu interrompere il cammino, ma riportandosi i loro carichi a valle. Ogni offerta di denaro e riduzione delle ore di marcia verso il campo base non avevano sortito alcun risultato, ma quella mia ultima offerta e richiesta invece è stata accettata. Ora la carovana di portatori si trova all’ultimo villaggio di Kauma e domani scenderanno a Tashigaon. Ora tocca a me trovare una soluzione. Elicottero? Probabile ma sarà difficile, perché in tutto il Nepal attualmente ci sono solo due elicotteri MI17 in grado di trasportare tutta quella roba, sono sempre impegnati in numerosi missioni di lavoro e in questa condizione di monopolio sparano prezzi stellari, impossibili…. Vediamo cosa ora mi invento. Io e Denis siamo qua nell’alto Khumbu che ci acclimatiamo tra i 5000 ed i 6000 metri ma la mia mente ora è altrove… (e non vi ho ancora detto che sin dall’inizio della spedizione ho problemi con la connessione satellitare…)

A winter expedition is always a night mare. Always!! What yesterday I was worry that could happen, it happen!! The porters stop their work in transporting all the loads to Makalu base camp and refused to continue. Due 1 meter of fresh snow and difficulties in braking trail, they decided to run back! Jagat Limbu, my cook and sirdar, phoned me by thuraya (thanks God I gave him one to be in touch daily) updating me about that bad news and asking me a prompt answer…. I told him that I understand the situation, that I located them on the Makalu map that I have with me and convince the porters to go back with their individual load and not empty!! If they should leave all those gear in the deep forest it should mean that the expedition is finished and everything lost… Of course before this decision I tried to convince the porters offering more money and reduce the time of daily work but with no positive result. After 6 hours of that talk I received another from Jagat. All the porters and all the load are safe in the last village of Kauma. Now I’m thinking a solution and Nima Nuru Sherpa, leader of Cho Oyu trekking is offering all his support. In Nepal there are only 2 big Helicopter and they are always busy. Their prices are crazy… We will see what we will do. In the meantime I and Denis are in the upper Khumbu acclimatizing but my mind now is quite far looking for a positive solution for my expedition. We will see… (Tomorrow I will tell you about the problems that I daily have with the sat connection)

Chukhunk Ri 5555 m

Oggi è stato un altro giorno “su”. Infatti stamattina anziché restare al lodge per un giorno di pausa, abbiamo deciso di salire ancora più in alto. Stavamo bene tutti e due, avevamo dormito profondamente, il battito cardiaco era normale e dunque non c’era ragione di oziare. Siamo dunque saliti fino in vetta al Chukhung Ri ed il GPS ci ha dato la quota di 5555 metri. Siamo rimasti un’oretta lassù scattando foto, godendoci il panorama e riempiendo i polmoni di aria rarefatta che di sicuro a stimolato il nostro acclimatamento. Purtroppo però le notizie che ci arrivano regolari dalla valle del Makalu sono preoccupanti, qusi tragiche. Oggi i portatori hanno gettato la spugna e si rifiutano di continuare. Causa delle abbondanti nevicate stanno procedendo in un metro di neve polverosa ed inconsistente ed a volte hanno impiegato un ora per avanzare di 100 metri. Oa i portatori hanno deciso di abbandonare tutto e correre via verso i loro villaggi. Questo per me sarebbe catastrofico perché il luogo dove si trovano è impervio e boschivo e dunque nessun elicottero riuscirebbe mai ad arrivare li e prelevare i materiali. Jagat sta lottando ed imprecando con i portatori per convincerli almeno a tornare in dietro riportando i loro carichi a valle. Sarebbe tragico ma almeno on catastrofico.. Se riescono a riportare tutti i materiali a Tashigaon almeno da li potrei organizzare un elicottero MI17 fino al campo base. I costi annunciati però son da far tremare le gambe…

Today it had been anther “up” day. In fact this morning we decided to continue our acclimatization process continuing to go higher till Chukhung Ri summit. Our GPS recorded a very nice altitude 5555 m and we spent there 1 hour taking photos and looking around. We had so nice view. It was windy but completly dry. Now we came back to our lodge at 4735m and we will enjoy the remaining 2 hours sun  Yesterday we had been in touch with our cook and Sirdar Jagat Limbu that is leading a 43 porters carovana toward Makalu Base camp. They had a lot of problems with deep snow and they are really fighting braking trail. In some point the spent 1 hour to move only 100 meters…. Now the problem become bigger and bigger because the porters refuse to continue and they said that they will run back… 20 of them just did it now (I get sat call from Jagat) Shit!! Now I have to fid a solution… but which..?

Chhukung 4730 m

Eccoci arrivati all’ultimo villaggio di questo ramo di valle che porta sotto la parete sud del Lhotse, Nuptse, Island Peak e del Khali Himal. L’Ama Dablam View Lodge è il nostro campo base e qua staremo 5 giorni compiendo alcune escursioni e salite di acclimatamento qua attorno. Oggi il tempo è stato fantastico e c ha permesso d scattare numerose fotografie ed ammirare queste cattedrali naturali di roccia e ghiaccio. L’aria è sempre frizzante ed il vento gelido. Di notte le temperature si spingono probabilmente tra i -15 e -20. Nulla di straordinario ma guardando il vento forte sulla cresta del Lhotse e del Nuptse possiamo immaginare che inferno debba essere lassù.

We arrived at the last village of Chhukung at 4730 m under the huge face of Lhotse, Nuptse, Island peak and Khali Himal. The Ama Dablam View lodge will be our “base camp” for the next 5 days while we will do some treks and climbs to better acclimatize and be ready for our Makalu winter attempt that should start after 15 days.. Today the weather had been fantastic and we took a lot of photos an videos. The air is cold and we calculate that in the night the temperature should drop down till -15° / -20°. During the day we enjoy the sun as much as we can. On the ridge of Lhotse and Nuptse the wind should be like hurricane and we can imagine how difficult should be there and Makalu will be the same…

Oggi è stata decisamente la giornata più bella dal punto di vista meteorologico e questo ci ha permesso di godere di panorami mozzafiato sulle montagne più alte della terra. Da Deboche infatti ci siamo trasferiti a Dingboche Camminando sempre con il naso all’insù e scattando fotografie a raffica. Ci siamo posizionati in un lodge carino e con una ampia vetrata che permette ai raggi del sole di entrare e scaldare l’ambiente. La temperatura notturna si aggira tra i -10 e i -15 e siamo curiosi di vedere come sarà qua domani. Il programma è di andare a Chukung e rimanere due giorni per fare qualche escursione verso il Chukung Ri che supera i 5000 metri e successivamente verso qualche meta più alta…

Today it had been the most beautiful due the fantastic sunny weather. During the walk from Deboche to Dingboche we saw with any clouds, some of the highest mountain of the planet and many other famous peaks of the Khumbu valley. In Dingboche we will spend the night in a cute and small lodge with a nice veranda where we can enjoy the fantastic warm of the sun protected from the wind. Tomorrow we will go in Chhukung at 4800 m and we will stay 2 days. We will walk over 5000 meters towards Chukung Ri and the next days we will look for highest point to reach…

Deboche 3710 m

Oggi abbiamo lasciato Namche Bazar e la compagnia degli amici incontrati ieri. La Spedizione di Ines Paper infatti oggi faceva rientro al loro campo base mentre noi abbiamo continuato il nostro camino arrivando al piccolissimo villaggio di Deboche (3 case). Qua c’è il lode più amato da me e Denis che abbiamo passato tante bellissime giornate durante le nostre precedenti spedizioni. Oggi il tempo è stato un po’ migliore dei giorni precedenti ma il sole si è fatto vedere raramente a causa di nuvoloni che dalle 10 di mattina ci hanno sempre tenuto compagnia. Domani l’obbiettivo è salire a Dingboche 4300 m. Li forse staremo due giorni per acclimatarci e salire il Dingboche Ri di 5000 metri circa.

Today we left Namche Bazar and the expedition of Ines Papert. They started to go back to their base camp and we continued till Deboche at 3710 meters. Here we are in our favourite lodge of Khumbu. The Ama Dablam Garden Lodge is the most famous lode for me and Denis and many other mountaineers that came here from Everest base camp to take rest before the summit push. Here We really spent unforgettable moments with many friends. Tomorrow we will go to Dingboche at 4300 m and probably we will stay 2 more day to acclimatize well and walk on the Dingboche Ri around 5000 m.

Eccoci nel villaggio degli Sherpa a 3500 metri di quota dopo due giornate di trekking. L’altro ieri da Lukla siamo scesi direttamente a Pakding con una breve camminata di due ore. Passata la notte al Namaste Lodge siamo poi ripartiti alla volta di Namche. Tre orette di camminata con cielo coperto e per l’ennesima volta sono arivato in questo magico villaggio. E’ cambiato moltissimo dalla prima volta che lo vidi nel 1992 ma resta sempre un bel posto dove passare un paio di giorni concedendo al corpo di acclimatarsi alle prime esposizioni alla quota. La camera dove io e Denis abbiamo dormito è la numero 308 dello Sherpa land Hotel di proprietà del nostro amico ed organizzatore della spedizione Nima Nuru Sherpa. Qua in camera abbiamo persino la doccia calda, le prese di corrente per caricare gli apparati elettronici e un letto caldo e pulito dove dormire. Davvero gli stessi confort del miglior hotel di Kathmandu e in un luogo decisamente migliore distante 7 giorni a piedi dalla prima strada, incredibile… Oggi andremo al villaggio di Thame e rientreremo nuovamente a Namche Bazar la sera. Se siamo fortunati incontreremo l’amico Apa Sherpa (salitore dell’Everest per 7 volte), e la spedizione femminile guidata da Ines Papert al Kwangde Lho. Se non sarà possibile incontrare questi amici rientreremo subito a Namche e ci berremo un bel cappuccino con brioches al cioccolato nella Bakery del villaggio . Ciao

Incontrti Ines ed il suo team al loro campo base e li abbiamo invitati a scendere a Namche Bazar a riposarsi, ricaricarsi e fare una doccia bollente. Non se lo sono fatti ripetere 2 volte….

Here we are in the Sherpas village at 3500 meter. In two days trekking from Lukla we arrived here. The first night we spent in Pakding at 2700 m. We reached the village in 2 hours of easy walking. Yesterday in 3 hours we arrived here in Namche bazar. I had been here for the first time in 1992 and in this 17 years many things are changed. Now the Lodge’s room we stay, has the hot shower, light and electricity to charge our electronic instruments, nice and clean beds and all the comforts as the best hotel in Kathmandu. This lodge called Sherpa Lands had been owned by our friend and chief of Cho Oyu trekking Nima Nuru. We will spend here 1 more nights to give time to our body to start the acclimatisation. Today we will just take a walk to Thame hoping to meet our friend Apa Sherpa (17 times on the summit of Everest) and Ines Paper that is leading a woman expedition to Kwangde Lho 6187 m. In case we will not meet them we will come back here in Namche in time to eat a chocolate croissant and drink one cappuccino 

Oggi dovrebbe essere stato l'ultimo giorno a kathmandu e domani inizierà la più interessante fase di acclimatamento. Per questo anche oggi ci siamo dedicati agli acquisti, a preparare le ultime cose, alla burocrazia (ho ricevuto finalmente il mio permesso di scalata) e pure a firmare i miei libri in vendita nella libreria Pilrim in Thamel. Oggi tutto il materiale della spedizione è volato a Tumlingtar assieme al cuoco e l'aiuto cuoco e poi in bus al villaggio di Chichila. Da li una carovana di 40 portatori trasporterà il tutto in 9 giorni di marcia fino al campo base del Makalu. Io e Denis invece tra poche ore voleremo a Lukla e staremo 15 giorni nella valle del Khumbu per acclimtarci e raggiungere i quasi 6000 metri del Kala Pattar e di altri passi li vicino. Andremo anche a Chhukung e nei dintorni. Poi ci trasferiremo al campo base del Makalu e al campo base avanzato (A.B.C.) ed inizieremo la scalata...

Today had been the last day in the city and tomorrow we will start our acclimatisation period. So we bought the last things and prepare the final equipment we will use during our acclimatisation period. I received the climbing permit f Makalu and also signed some copies of my book in the Pilgrims Book House in Thamel. Today our cargo and all the necessary things we will use during the expedition flown to Tumlingtar and than by bus to Chichila. After tomorrow a carovana of 40 porters will trek in 9 days to Hillary Base camp and than it will be established the ABC. I and Denis tomorrow will fly to Lukla and than our trekking till Kala Pattar, close to Everest Base camp and than trek in that area and also in Chhukung. After 15 days in Khumbu we will go to Makalu base camp well acclimatized and will start our climb....

Primo giono dell’anno a Kathmandu - First day of the new year in Kathmandu

Sono arrivato poche ore prima di capodanno qua nella citale Nepalese e il capodanno l’ho passato davanti al computer a lavorare. All’aeroporto è venuto Denis Urubko e Nima Nuru (il titolare della Cho Oyu Trekking, l’agenzia che logisticamente mi ha organizzato la spedizione).
Siamo andati direttamente all’Hotel Yak & Yeti e poi a mangiarci una pizza al Fire and Ice. Erano 24 ore che ero partito dall’Italia e dopo la lunga attesa a Doha avevo voglia di dormire e non di festeggiare. Ma tornato in albergo ho cominciato a lavorare al PC ed ho smesso solo alle due di notte. La festa di capodanno non sono mai riuscita a considerarla un evento straordinario o un giorno così particolare da dover stravolgere le mie abitudini.
Oggi invece è stato un giorno intensissimo. Colazione presto, incontro con Miss Hawley, la giornalista che dal ‘63 segue, cataloga ed archivia tutte le informazioni sulle spedizioni operanti in Himalaya. Le ho regalato il mio libro sulla storia e sulle vie di tutti gli 8000 metri ed è stato un onore vedere il suo entusiasmo ed accettare i suoi complimenti!! Terminato l’ incontro ecco il meeting con Nima nel suo ufficio per parlare di logistica e di tutti costi che la nostra invernale comporta, poi briefing al Ministero del Turismo e poi a fare acquisti e nuovamente alla Cho Oyu trekking a preparare i materiali ed i viveri che già domani voleranno a Tumlingtar ed inizieranno il trekking ed il trasporto degli stessi sotto la guida del mio cuoco e sirdar Jagat Limbu aiutato dal suo fido Mingma. Io e Denis staremo ancora un giorno qua a Kathmandu e poi voleremo nella valle dell’Everest per fare 2 settimane di trekking e acclimatamento.

Yesterday I arrived here in Kathmandu few hours before the new year and at midnight I was in my hotel room working at Pc…. Denis and Nima Nuru (chief of Cho Oyu trekking) pick me at the airport and after drove me at the Yak and Yeti hotel, we went to eat a good pizza to Fire and Ice Restaurant. There were 24 hours that I was travelling and I had a long wait in the Doha airport and I was dreaming for a nice sleep but when I came back in the hotel I started to work at my laptop and I stopped around 2 am. So at midnight I was not doing party, but working for my coming winter dream… Today it had been a very busy day. I wake up very early and after breakfast I meet Miss Hawley, the famous old lady (journalist) that since 1983 is following, doing interview and recording all the expedition in Himalaya. It had been as usual a nice meeting and I gave her present my new book about all the 8000 meters peak history with all the photos, all the faces and all routes of the 14 peaks above 8000 meters. I had been proud to receive her appreciation and congratulations. She was surprised about my job for that book When I finished that meeting I went to Nima’s office talking about the logistic and the detailed costs of all the expedition. Than we went to ministry of tourism doing the briefing (and waiting 2 hours before to start that meeting). Than again to Nima’s office preparing all the climbing equipment, food and base camp equipment. Tomorrow all those equipment will fly to Tumlingtar and Jagat Limbu (my cook and sirdar) will start to trek to base camp together his assistant Mingma and around 40 porters. I and Denis will stay one day more here in Kathmandu and than we will fly in Everest region to trek and have 2 weeks acclimatisation program.

Gli atomi del Camos sono ancora quà perchè "nulla si crea e nulla si distrugge". Questa era la sua frase e questa è la realtà. Ciao Camos oggi ti ho incontrato e ti ho toccato. Io sto per partire per il Nepal. Ho preso una manciata di te e me la sono messa in tasca. Ti voglio portare con me anche questa volta....

Ultimi giorni prima della partenza per il makalu fissata il 30 Dicembre. Arriverò a Kathmandu poche ore prima di capodanno. Dopo due giorni voleremo nella valle del khumbu per due settimane di acclimatamento e poi ci trasferiremo al campo base del makalu. Mentre noi faremo acclimatamento, la carovana di portatori insieme al nostro cuoco Jagat Limbu andranno al campo base del Makalu ed allestiranno il tutto.
Speriamo che questo 2009 ci regali un inverno soleggiato.....

Last days before the daparture day that is scheduled for the 30th december. I will arrive in Kathmandu just few hours before the big party for the new year... The 2nd January I and Denis will fly to Lukla and than we will spend 2 days in the khumbu valley to get acclimatisation. In the same days our Cook and all the porters will trek till Makalu base camp and prepare our base ready for our arrival.
We hope that the new year will give us a sunny winter....

Simone Moro e Denis Urubko in inverno al Makalu.

Il Makalu (8463m) è rimasta l’unica delle sette cime dell’Himalaya su cui nessun essere umano ha ancora messo piede nella stagione invernale. Conosciuto nel dialetto locale come Kumba Karma, “Il Gigante”, il Makalu è un vero gigante; in altezza (con I suoi 8463 metri è la 5° cima più alta della terra), in bellezza e nella mente e nell’immaginazione dei migliori himalaysti del mondo. La prima salita invernale del Makalu rappresenta l’ultima grande sfida prima del chiudersi di un’era.

Simone Moro, atleta del Global Team The North Face, insieme a Denis Urubko tenterà durante la stagione invernale 2008/2009 (dal 21 dicembre al 21 marzo) la salita a questa ancora inviolata cima dell’Himalaya Nepalese. The North Face è orgogliosa di supportare Simone durante questa nuova avventura. Il tentativo verrà compiuto dai due alpinisti in puro stile veloce e leggero senza l’utilizzo di ossigeno e senza portatori d’alta quota. Il tentativo di Simone e Denis aggiungerà un capitolo alla storia dell’esplorazione invernale di questa montagna, iniziata quasi trent’anni fa, nel 1980 da Renato Casarotto e Mario Curnis.

L’inverno in Himalaya è normalmente un periodo off season e tutta l’attenzione degli appassionati di alta quota e della comunità alpinistica sarà concentrata su questa scalata invernale.

La passione di Simone per l’esplorazione lo ha portato dalle Alpi alle montagne più alte del pianeta ed i suoi talenti di rock climber, ice climber e alpinista d’alta quota sono conosciuti ed apprezzati in tutto il mondo. Tra le 40 spedizioni sulle cime di tutto il pianeta negli ultimi sedici anni, spicca la prima salita invernale dello Shishapangma (8027m) compiuta nel 2005 insieme a Piotr Morawski.

L’entusiasmo, l’energia, l’umiltà e la gioia per la vita di Simone sono una fonte di inesauribile ispirazione. The Winter Crown of the Himalayas ….

Makalu (8463m) has become renowned as the winter crown of the Himalayas, its summit yet to be trodden by human foot during the harsh winter season. Known as ‘The Giant’ Kumba karna in local dialect, it truly is a giant; in stature (at 8463m it is the 5th highest mountain in the world), in beauty, and in the minds and imaginations of the best high altitude alpinists of the world. It poses the last great challenge for high altitude Himalayan mountaineering in winter.

The North Face global athlete Simone Moro, together with his team-mate Denis Urubko, will attempt to reach this last untouched winter summit of the Nepalese 8000’ers in the 2008/2009 winter season (21st December to 21st March). The North Face is proud to support their forthcoming expedition. Their attempt will be made in true alpine style - without oxygen or high altitude Sherpa and with only very limited use of fixed rope. It will build on the dreams and experience of almost 30 years, from the first winter attempt in 1980.

The expedition will be documented with daily video and photo dispatches on www.simonemoro.com and www.thenorthface.com inviting a wide audience to follow and to be inspired. It will capture the imagination of the amateur and enthusiast, but it will also hold the climbing elite as a captive audience since the expedition is in the traditional ‘low season’ for himalayan climbing.

Simone’s passion for exploration has led him from his playground in the Italian Dolomites to the highest places on our earth. He is world renowned for his all round prowess as an alpinist, on rock, on ice and at altitude. His 40 expeditions during the last 16 years already include the first winter ascent of Shishapangma (8027m).

Simone has incredible drive and energy, his humility, his happiness and his love for life are a constant inspiration. For Simone to reach the winter summit of Makalu he will be living a dream, for him “it would be a very deep personal joy, but also the culmination of almost 30 years of efforts from the world’s best alpinists”. Mentre aspetto che arrivi il giorno della partenza della mia prossima avventura rispolvero alcuni momenti divertenti passati al campo base della mia ultima spedizione. Quella che sta per arrivare di spedizione non potrà certo permettermi di provare a scalare in maglietta sui sassi vicino al campo base...

While I'm waiting the departure date of my next expedition, I enjoy watching some videos of my recent expedition wher I have funny moments in base camp. For sure the next expedition will be much more extreme even in base camp...

Ecco iniziata l'avventura con il Blog. Dopo l'esperienza con extremehd.net degli scorsi due inverni e la decennale esperienza dell'invio giornaliero di news, foto e filmati, durante le mie spedizioni alpinistiche, ecco che ho deciso di crearmi il mio blog personale che affiancherà il mio sito internet. With this report, start now my "adventure" with my blog. After the experience with the blog extremehd.net that I arranged during my last 2 winter expedition in Karakorum and previously on my web ste simonemoro.com during my 15 years expeditions in all continents, now is time to arrange my own blog that will integrate my web site (that son will have a new version).
